Child Healing Centre

Year Established: 2017

The vision for the Child Healing Centre (CHC) began when a child who had undergone trauma joined the SS Family. George and Manju searched for a Centre catered to treating children who’ve experienced trauma, to no avail. A victim of child abuse himself, George understood the need for such a place and was burdened to intervene. This began a journey that led to the formation of the CHC.

At CHC, we have two primary goals.

  • Providing victims of child abuse with professional care, through trauma care and rehabilitation.
  • Creating awareness about the reality of Child Abuse in India, as well as training and empowering individuals and institutions to intervene in this space.

We are currently building a state-of-the-art Emotional Trauma Care Centre in Bangalore. In the meanwhile, we have started conducting workshops and grassroot trainings for institutions and caregivers. We have also begun conducting awareness sessions and creating audio-visual resources.

The CHC team has received training from international specialist institutes and have adopted several reputed methods in their trauma care approach, including Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) and techniques from the Trauma Healing Institute.

Reach

We have conducted workshops for over 500 caregivers and interested individuals. While our awareness sessions have had over 5000 participants.

Looking Ahead

India is slowly awakening to the reality of Child Abuse. However, while there is a lot of hue and cry over the issue, those affected are often forgotten. Reports say that more than 50% of children in India have experienced one or more forms of abuse and almost 95% of those raped where abused by someone they knew. Other reports claim that a child is victim of a sexual offence every 15 minutes.

What needs to be understood is that the effects of abuse last far longer than the actual incident itself. Studies have shown that childhood trauma has a strong influence on the future of those affected. There is an urgent need for more support and investment in this space.

Our objectives for 2019-20 through CHC is to:

  • Conduct 2 workshops and 3 grassroot trainings quarterly: Which will train over 3,300 caregivers and have 2000 individuals go through awareness sessions and workshops.
  • Publish audio-visual aids for Parents, Institutions and NGOs.
  • Complete Phase 1 in the construction of CHC’s Emotional Trauma Care Centre.

Testimonials from our Workshops and Training

My husband and I own a law firm that intends on helping children and teenagers. When I received the invitation to attend this workshop, I was not sure how these 3 days of learning would help me, however this changed from the ‘get go’. Every session had its own set of learnings for me. I was neglected as a child myself, having lost my parents at a very tender age. Having to live with my Uncle and his family was also not easy. Of the many things I learnt these during these 3 days, the one phrase that stands out is ‘there is a meaning behind every behaviour’. I am really grateful that I was given the opportunity to attend this workshop. I am looking forward to attending more in the future.

I wish to train our staff to work more effectively with children. We used to think that we can run a children’s home as we wish but things have started to change. Trained staff is a necessity and we need to focus on the all-round development of the child. For me as a father of 3 children it was really an eye-opening session. We need to understand our children from their level and not from our level. This training gives me HOPE. Even if it takes a lifetime, there is hope.

I engage with children at work. There were many times I have wondered why I have not been able to help correct their behaviour. This training helped me understand that I have to connect to the child/teen before I attempt to correct them.
